2013 Starbucks Planner

What I like about November is that it marks the start of "sticker collection season" for Starbucks coffee lovers. I've been getting Starbucks Planners for several years already; it's a nice reward for being a loyal customer.

For this year, Starbucks Philippines started to offer the signature Christmas drinks last Nov 3. Along with it came the 2013 promo card wherein you need to complete a total of 17 stickers to get 1 planner. I got mine yesterday, Nov 8. wooooot! No I haven't drank 17 cups of coffee in a span of 5 days.. Teamwork is the key! :) Try it out with your coffee buddies, and you'll be surprised how many planners you'll end up with before the promo ends.

He is in Control

A Time for Everything

Ecclessiastes 3:1-15 NIV

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

What do workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him. 15 Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before; and God will call the past to account.

No matter how "prepared" we seem to be, one could not escape the heart-piercing pain brought about by the death of a loved one.

That each day you recalled as a blessing of life, has also been a step closer to the end...

That each day you prayed for strength, caused you an uncontrollable amount of tears...

This is life...  in all its genuinety.

Amidst the pain, there is nothing to fear though...

God is here, and He is in control.

I miss you Dad, it's been a year....

Halloween Pumpkin

I've always wanted to create something like this, I think I'll get really really creative...

Freshly carved pumpkin from the Le Chef Lunch Buffet Table at the Manor, Camp John Hay,  Baguio City

...but then again, I hate (and I am afraid of) using knives! I got a bad cut while I was peeling green mangoes when I was a kid. So there, it's better if I just take pictures instead. It keeps my hands safe from a possible bloody mess.

Enjoy the long weekend, everyone! Stay safe!

Early Christmas Gift from Starbucks

It was a gloomy start of the week for me. But somehow the friendly baristas at the Starbucks Pearl Drive branch made me smile. Thanks for the early Christmas gift!! I appreciate it :)

It'll be Peppermint Mocha for me, as usual :)

The Christmas Drinks will be offered starting Saturday --- Nov 3, 2012.
I wonder how the 2013 Starbucks planners would look like..

Minion Cupcakes!

This is the reason why my EQ is bugging me for the past few days... excited much! I got glued watching "Cake Boss" on cable TV, so I thought of giving custom cupcakes to a dear friend for her birthday. After several online searches and emailed inquiries, one cake shop finally replied. Yes, just one! And I'm very happy with the final product.

Say hello to the chocolate cupcake minions! :)
(Happy Birthday, ZZ!)

Here's a closer look...

The name of the shop is Teacher CaKe. Two thumbs up! (Great job, Kaye.. I'm a fan now)

Check out their facebook page here. Seriously, their designs are amazing!

Address: 162 F. Benitez Street, 1500 Manila, Philippines
Contact No.: 0916 624 0811, look for Kaye

The cupcakes are really really cute!!
But we have one problem... we don't wanna eat it. How could we?! Hahaha...

UPDATE: Guilty as charged! We ate the minions the next day, and they're yummy! Beneath the yellow/blue fondant is a cream filling. The chocolate cupcake is moist. And the sweetness is just right (to think that fondant is already sweet). Overall, the flavor is just exactly how I want it. I'll be ordering more custom cakes from Teacher caKe, that's for sure! :)

Mosquito Wars: The Dengue Virus

One saturday afternoon, I was not feeling well. I could not remember the last time I got stuck at home due to fever. I always thought I could just shake it off and resume whatever activity I have for the day.

Day One.
My fever was at 39 degrees. Is that bad? I said to myself I could deal with it. So I slept, but when I woke up my temperature is still the same. I sent a text message to our lead in the music team to inform that I may not be able to play keyboards for Sunday. I remembered receiving a reply. But when I woke up the next day, I could not find the text messages in my phone. I sent another message to our lead, to confirm if he got my message the previous night, but he said he didn't receive any. At that point, it was confirmed... I was hallucinating!

Day Two.
The fever seemed to die down late afternoon. I felt better after taking a bath. So I assumed I was okay. I felt okay. I happily went out to watch a last full show movie with my movie night buddies. I went home, I felt weird again. I just drank water and slept.

Day Three.
I didn't check my temperature. It's a Monday, I must go to work. Work starts with coffee, and so I got myself my usual drink and a sandwich from starbucks before heading back to the office. When we reached the parking at the basement of the building, I got dizzy and suddenly it was hard to breathe. Felt like I was gasping for air. So I just worked half day and went home.

Day Four.
I worked from home. I still don't think seeing a doctor is necessary. But my temperature went up again. It's back at 39 degrees. A friend of mine advised me to go see a doctor, I told her I'll be okay. Another dear friend told me the same thing. And she added that I'd need a medical certificate. I was convinced --- she's my boss! :)

Day Five.
I went to see the family doctor. But there was a queue, I was number 13. I told mom to sit beside me so I could lean on her shoulder while waiting for my turn. The patients beside me started to notice and said that it would be better if I go ahead of them. I looked very pale and was about to collapse. Doc Chua said that I need to be admitted in the hospital so they could perform tests. There was no available room in the Paranaque Doctors Hospital at the moment so I was in the waiting list at number 18. Doc Chua said it would be better if I transfer to the hospital in Alabang where he holds a clinic too. So off we went... I got confined at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center.

Late in the afternoon, the results are in... it turned out I have Dengue. And it was the 2nd strain already! Meaning, I didn't know that I had Dengue before. I remembered there was one time I also had high fever. I ignored it. And it worked the first time.

The virus was more aggressive at the 2nd attack and it gets more worse as it repeats. There is no cure. Just fluids and nourishment to help increase and stabilize the platelet count. So it's important to keep your surroundings mosquito-free. The mosquito battle is on!

Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Asian Hospital and Medical Center for taking care of me for 7 days. You all did a great job! But even if your hospital is very posh, I don't wish to be back. Haha...cheers to good health! =)

My friends spent time with me at the hospital too.. some of them slept very soundly. Hehe, kidding! I love them heaps! Thanks friends!

I'm alive and kicking! ...let the good times roll! :)

Passing the Strings...

Took some pictures of my electric guitar last Saturday.. I braved going to Quiapo to buy it in the streets of Raon. That was around 10 years ago (I think). It was an adventure. :) And now it's time to pass it on... I have used the guitar mainly for church service, so I pray that the next owner(s) would really be blessed and that their music will be a blessing to others too.. As for me, I still have an old keyboard, and I'm also praying for a Roland RD-700NX... hafta save up! *big smile*

Alcatel One Touch Glory X918N

Way back in college, I remembered Alcatel as that funny looking but somehow efficient mobile phone. Funny because it used to look like a soap bar, efficient because it can be powered by 2 AA batteries -- a good feature to have during power outages especially when dormitories are not equipped with generators.

Anyway, they have evolved alright, and one more good thing is that their products are still economical. Check out their website here. And here's one of their latest touchscreen phones.. the Alcatel One Touch Glory X918N. Read more after the jump...

Cake Heaven: Vizco's Restaurant and Cake Shop in Baguio

For about 3 (or 4?) years now, Baguio has been my favorite go to place when I want to escape from the noise of Manila. While most friends can't seem to dig why we always go there when all we do is to sleep most of the time, my Baguio buddies and I are just addicted to the place. It's hard to explain, really, like we're in a magic spell of some sort.. and oh, it's partly because of the pillows, bedsheets and comforters too. :)

Every year, when strawberries are in season, we make it a point to drop by Vizco's along Session Road. Their Strawberry Shortcake is really yummy. Last weekend, our cravings led us to that cake shop in Session Road again and we were very happy to see that the strawberry shortcake is available. As a bonus, we also learned that they're now selling Red Velvet cakes too!

..And so the cake night! Haha! I forgot to take pictures of the cakes fresh right out of the box. So here it is 10 minutes after... (Photo taken from my Blackberry)

Essilor Crizal Forte UV Lens Review

Last month, I attended the Philippine Launch of one of Essilor's breakthrough lenses, the Crizal Forte UV, at the NBC Tent in Bonifacio Global City. Check out the post here.

Recently, I have decided to retire my orange funky black rimmed glasses with a sharp looking chic silver frame. Hmmm, no I wasn't really on the lookout for something chic, haha. That's so not me! It just happened that I was able to spot an optical shop with a good selection of frames at a good price, and then I fell in love with this style. Anyway,  t'was a perfect timing also to test out the new Crizal Forte UV Lenses. Excited much!

Lovin' the Curve!

After much thought on the battle of the mobile tech fruits, I decided to get myself a Blackberry Curve 9380 early this year. Reasonably priced at less than Php 20k, this 3.5" full touch-screen phone is a winner :)

It runs on Blackberry OS 7.0 (I haven't upgraded to 7.1 yet.... I don't think the upgrade is already available here in the Philippines), with powerful messaging features and pre-installed apps, WiFi, and a 5MP Camera (w/ LED flash!).

Battery life? hmmm, it sucks. But the reason behind the battery drain is pretty obvious though ---- I use it all the time to check my FB and Twitter accounts, chat with friends on BBM, do some browsing, play games, watch YouTube videos, create word documents for blog drafts, create simple spreadsheets, read RSS feeds etc...  so I see to it that I always bring my charger with me wherever I go.

Essilor Philippines: Crizal Forte UV Launch [Part 1]

Essilor, the world leader in the production of prescription lenses, has introduced another brilliant innovation on a product launch held at the NBC Tent, Fort Bonifacio Global City last July 16, 2012.

Fabulous is an understatement. Kudos to the organizers!
Here are some of the event pictures:

Crizal Forte UV protects our eyes from the harmful UV rays whether it's coming in front or back of our eyeglasses. Aside from that, it gives best resistance against reflections, scratches, dust, smudges, and water. More details on my next post. I can't wait to use this product!

The Oatmeal Diet

Today marks the start of my 7-day oatmeal diet. I dropped by the grocery yesterday to buy skim milk, muscovado sugar, and a big pack of the glorious rolled oats. Boring, yes I know. I intentionally prepared it simple for my first day and, heck no! I won’t last for 7 days eating just this. I’m gonna make a trip to the grocery again this afternoon, after my gym time, to complete my line up of toppings: apple, banana, cinnamon, berries, walnuts, and almonds. These should make me feel that I won't be deprived of good food for the whole week… in variety, but mixed in moderation of course.

Oatmeal is considered as a health food and is proven to reduce cholesterol levels, promote weight loss, and lower the risk of cancer. I personally prefer rolled oats over quick oats or those sold as instant oats. Rolled oats are more chewy. Texture is good plus it’s all natural. Instant oats are already mixed with different varieties of sugar so if you’re aiming for weight loss, stay away from it.

Nuff said, now here’s my breakfast... so help me God.

Plain rolled oats with skim milk and muscovado sugar

Jamba Juice, I beg you, please open a branch in Makati or Ortigas...

Theo & Philo: Dark Chocolate with Siling Labuyo

On chocolate preference, I say bitter is better. Either plain, with nuts, or with mint --- dark chocolates are my favorite! I went to a milk tea store in Ortigas last week and when I was about to pay for my wintermelon tea, I noticed some goodies at the counter. Dark Chocolates, yay!

From afar, I thought they were selling a not-so-popular imported brand of chocolate until I went closer and found this...

"Theo and Philo's Dark Chocolate with Siling Labuyo"

They're selling it at Php 95.00 per bar. Quite pricey, but it has the magic words in it: "dark chocolate".
So I bought one. :)

On Pag-IBIG's "Anti-Depression" Loan...

I was browsing through my twitter news feed when this tweet caught my attention...

Seriously?! When did depression became a valid reason for getting a loan? That's a major no-no!

Read the article here.

It's good that there are programs such as the Pag-IBIG fund which exists to provide assistance for Filipinos to pay for housing and for other personal expenses when these needs arise. But dubbing the short-term loan as an "anti-depression" loan is CARELESS MARKETING. Why capitalize on depression? Encourage people to get into debt for the wrong reasons, won't that make them even more depressed in the long-term?

My two cents.

3D Stereograms

Look closely at this picture. What do you see?

I remember the time when these stereograms were very popular. I'm not one of those cool people who could identify the hidden texts or pictures. I could stare for a couple of minutes, even hours, but I would fail each time. Anyway, I spent a good time figuring out some stereograms on google with my friend yesterday. Finally, I can see the hidden pictures! ...well, at least some of it ;)

BDO Easy Investment Plan

"We find ways"

I must say, Banco de Oro (BDO) still lives up true to its tagline. From an average Filipina who knows a thing or two about personal savings accounts and time deposits, I came to realize that I am finally getting aggressive on one important thing that I didn't really bother to seriously think about during my early years of employment --- "Investing".

I am quite traditional. Not the "coin-bank-hidden-inside-the-closet" type, but somehow close. I maintain a passbook account with BDO and I intentionally did not get an ATM card. As cliche as it is, bank interest rates suck... and so my money slept, well, at least its safe there... that's my only consolation.

Bubbles of comfort

A typical work day for me includes juggling my time between my regular job, freelance work, shirt business, market research, and personal banking/investing. Too serious? Hmmm, not really :) When passion is very much alive, there will be no room for complains. I love the things that I do. Okay, so I don't have work-life balance... but I'm taking conscious efforts now (really! *grin*), and I guess there's a bit of an improvement in that area. ヅ

Recently, I have rewarded myself with this....

"The happy yellow package"

I heart you, LUSH Philippines!

I'm currently working on a major blog overhaul... and i'm making progress, people! A few more tweaks and i'm all set (yay!). Dear Google, when will you release a Blogger App for Blackberry users? life will be a whole lot easier...
